The historical Khyber Pass, which connects Peshawar and Kabul, has played a crucial role in commerce between Afghanistan, Central Asia, and South Asia. Due to the geographical isolation of Afghanistan and the central Asian republics, as well as the shifting global dynamics from geopolitics to geoeconomics, the route’s strategic importance has intensified in the current situation. One of the main objectives of the initiative is to facilitate trade under the CAREC Regional Integration Programme.
One such project under CAREC connects Afghanistan and the CARs with Pakistan so that they may receive hot water to improve and diversify their trade portfolios. A four lane Peshawar-Torkham motorway (PTEX) will be built together with a comprehensive economic development programme across the corridor to boost and diversify commerce, improve lives and uplift communities in the KPEC, which is the CAREC regional integration program’s corridors 5 and 6.
